Flush from their success against Ashley, Didsbury entertained top of the table and perennial hot favourites Alderley Edge. The opening bowling pair of Alfie and Owen did a reasonable job of restricting early progress. Alderley though countered strongly with good running between the wickets, but here they ran into strong resistance. Once again the team attacked the ball in the field restricting the batters progress. Left handed quickie Ethan “Wasim” Hughes returned to the side and built up a head of steam taking the only wicket of the innings thanks to a fine diving overhead catch from keeper Alfie. Harry Youell delivered a metronomic spell of line and length, infuriating the visiting batters. Despite this Alderley still rustled up a very competitive total of 297. If the running between the wickets by Alderley was strong, Didsbury’s batters were like gazelles on an African plain. Each pair continually pressed for the second run creating pressure amongst all of Alderley’s fielders. Hefty blows over deep square leg there weren’t but slowly and steadily Didsbury built a foundation. Zac, increasingly resembling a right handed Graham Thorpe began to pick holes in the 4-2 field. Alfie and Owen set the tone with some Randalesque running. Harry Youell standing tall counter-punched, when things looked difficult with some lovely boundaries. As the last pair came to the wicket the local crowd chewed on fingernails or hid in the bar. Seamus and Shaun strode out like Monty Panesar and Jimmy Anderson – their very own Cardiff moment. Seamus unfurled some lovely shots square, Sean scuttled between the wickets. By the final over, the pair had turned the tables, the mathematics were clear - Alderley needed wickets to win. Seamus and Sean dropped anchor like dreadnoughts in Scappa flow. Alderley threw the kitchen sink but to no avail, Didsbury held firm, making it home with a total of 307. Played 2 won 2. McCall is building a team which, does the basics very well. The team itself is quickly understanding where its strengths lie and building on these.
