1s underway with friendly win

Nick's men spring into action

The 1st XI made probably their earliest ever start with a comfortable 70 run win over Lancashire League side Todmorden at Wilmslow Rd on Saturday. The proposed match at Harrogate sadly fell through after the hosts pulled out, so it was good news to be able to welcome meaningful opposition to Dids with the start of the season just around the corner.

Indeed, Todmorden get underway in earnest next weekend so they were especially glad to get some match time in, albeit they were not at full strength. Then again, neither were Didsbury, but both sides enjoyed spells in the ascendancy after Todmorden were asked to bowl first.

True, Tod's spell on top only lasted 7.3 overs, in which time Dids stumbled to 19-3, but Rob Sehmi's debut proved decisive as a calmly compiled 82 off 86 enabled the 1s to reach 211-8, stands of 55 with Nick and 54 with Steve Green (who made a jaunty 41) good to watch.

The visitors made a poor start of their own in reply (17-3 off 7) but they couldn't recover - not much of a surprise against the quality of the 1s attack in truth. After Nick and Liam struck early on (the major snaffling three wickets), the four spinners used all proved difficult to get away, three of them taking two apiece as the match concluded in the same welcome sunshine it was played in throughout. The scorecard is on Play Cricket for those interested.

Even this early in April the ground looked great and hopefully we will have a repeat come next Saturday when GMACL champions Prestwich visit in a Charity Shield equivalent, if you will, in what will be another valuable warm up ahead of the title defence that commences on the 22nd.
