Yes that really did happen. The first Dids double ton since 1999, and the highest ever individual score for the 1st XI, overtaking Mark Slater's 190 in 2001 (funnily enough, also in the Cheshire Cup). Rob's innings on Sunday will go down in the record books of the club (along with a 3rd honours board appearance, 2 in the space of six weeks nonetheless). Although maybe not in the record books of the cup, given the match was abandoned, and will end up being recorded as a friendly on Play-Cricket!
201 off 112 deliveries, 12 fours, 16 sixes, the baseline figures for the incredible knock not quite reflecting how brutal the assault of the Macclesfield bowling line-up was. It was even more remarkable given he was dropped on 0, the score could have read 0-3 off 4.1 overs, with Macc making the ball talk early. To add to that, a missed stumping on 63 having faced 60 balls really sealed their fate.
And if you didn't catch that, yes, Rob was on 63 off 61 after that chance. To score 138 runs off just 51 balls under any circumstances would be a fantastic effort, but on a dark Cheshire day facing the red ball, having already dug Dids out of a hole (ably assisted by a maiden 1st XI fifty from Alex) in a crucial knockout match was quite simply unbelievable. The fielders at deep square leg and cow corner could only stand and watch as the ball sailed half-way up the trees with great regularity. The other scorer said that he'd never seen a six hit out of the ground and onto the road, Matthew Hayden (yep, that one) getting the closest by hitting the wall at the back of the parking lot. Rob gave it a good go, launching one over the scoreboard and into the undergrowth. The six that brought up his 200 could have been the biggest of the lot, towering way onto the second pitch (fortunately the junior match had already come to an end way before the onslaught).
I'll spare you the rest of the superlatives, but for now, just take a look at the scorecard, and if you get the time, go back and watch one of the best innings you'll ever see. You won't regret it.
