Upsides of a depressing day

Upsides of a depressing day

1s still top despite rain ruining match

Yes, I'm back scoring for the 1s for a few games, but didn't pick the ideal day to come back to the scorebox - which was a depressing site in itself, I must say, with all sorts of PA stuff just chucked in, as was the portable scoreboard. Having to spend the first part of your day cleaning up other people's mess that they simply couldn't be arsed to put away properly themselves is not an uplifting start. Whoever was responsible, be way more considerate of other scorebox users please, otherwise next time I will simply take the whole lot away and lob it on the tip.

Point I hope being made we will move onto the cricket, which like so many matches across the region was ultimately scuppered by the rain. And unfortunately, unlike Alderley Edge playing just down the road at Kingsway, Nick lost the toss and Dids had to bat. It might have been a very different day had that call gone the other way! But there’s nothing can be done about it, and in the end to finish with 227 wasn’t the worst outcome. All the overs were used (across two interruptions), Ed’s sixth half century of the season (to go with a ton) was another classy and composed knock, very much the glue that held things together as a succession of batters got starts but didn’t go on. Indeed, when Ed and James Green fell to successive deliveries in the 53rd over, there was the chance that the 1s would miss out on maximum batting points, but the General played a dab little hand to make sure that milestone was achieved.

Liam was straight into action with ball in hand, Tom Forster carving his third ball to point where Tim took a smart catch, and when Horse then produced an awkward lifter first ball which Jimmy O’Sullivan gloved down the leg side, Charlie produced an equally sharp piece of work to leave Toft 2-2. Steve only got four balls bowled but induced a wild hack from Gennaro Reddy, a more straightforward yet potentially tricky catch (with a wet ball) which Charlie held, and in so doing, secured one more point for Dids before the rain came again and this time just wouldn’t go.

As I said, Alderley Edge got a win by running through Cheadle for 69, but Hyde were rained off and Nantwich lost, so all in all the 1s, with 11 pts, came out better than might have been expected, whilst frustrated to only have seven overs at opponents who were on the ropes. It’s a trip to Widnes next and a chance to put right the early season reverse suffered at their hands.
