The Lions Roar

Following the mid-week bruising away to Brooklands, the Lions returned to the lair, licking their wounds. For the top order this meant an opportunity to spend much needed time in the middle during an U13 inter-club game on Friday night.

And so to Sunday Morning – Nico time. The infamous chanteuse of Velvet Underground fame spent time in Didsbury of course, engraining herself within the psyche of those that live and play here. Retaining the musical theme, it’s seven years since Klara and Johanna Soderberg, aka First Aid Kit , released their highly acclaimed album ‘The Lion’s Roar’. By 1pm Sale’s cricketers were in dire need of the Swedish medical service.

Long before scrambled eggs had hit the plate, head coach Laker patrolled the Sale outfield overseeing drills, the likes of which a sergeant within the US Marine Corp would have been proud. Techno music spewed over the boundary rope detonating hangovers hidden behind net curtains, a consequence of a Saturday night on sweet white wine and assorted nuts.

As is Alfie’s maxim on winning the toss he stuck Sale in. Ethan returning to the side opened up with Seamus and whilst neither bowler could make a breakthrough, the batsmen became becalmed. Alfie and Tom as second string, took up the miserly mantle until the former broke through with a regulatory caught and bowled. Maaria, oversaw spinning duties, turning it both ways before Charlie opened his account with a catch taken by Seamus at Mid-wicket. Ben, then took up the cause taking a steepling caught and bowled. Harry achieving consistent length created a deepening sense of frustration from behind the net curtains, exacerbated further by the bounce which Seb was able to extract off the plastic. Will took the gloves at the half-way point and was quietly efficient, allowing Matthew to turn over his arm. Seemingly creating a spur off the Pennine Way, he trundled in tidily as the batsman fought hard to eke out runs. In the margins Alfie barked like a Blackburn market stall hand, selling potatoes by the pound, urging his bowlers on and caressing his field into position. The net curtains twitched one last time and Sale departed with a rather modest 74 to show for their morning’s endeavours.

The regular opening batsman of Seamus and Tom walked out with a bit of a point to prove with expectation levels rising amongst the visiting supporters. Solidly and confidently, both openers felt their way into the opening overs - Seamus’s Gordon Greenidge to Tom’s Desmond Haynes. Confidence flowed and sensing opportunity to impress Seamus opened arms and cover drove superbly. Tom, all staccato square cuts, drove a beat for Sale’s fielders to dance to. Both duly retired with Maariah striding to the wicket, promoted to number three and driving sumptuously. Alongside Alfie, who pulled anything short belligerently, they oversaw Didsbury’s victory without loss of wicket and with 8 overs to spare. This allowed a ‘free swim’ - Ethan entertained, dealing only in boundaries, Alfie departed after a ferocious pulled six. Ben, quite the cavalier, pulled emphatically high over deep square leg for six before events were wound up unceremoniously by 1pm.

From frustrated growls on Thursday to an emphatic roar on Sunday, the Lions had bounced back emphatically.
