Didsbury U11 Lions 106/4 beat Lindow Gold 102/8 by 6 wickets
On a murky morning, memories of a miserable May came flooding back as Didsbury U11 Lions took on Lindow Gold. Didsbury CC won the toss and with a dampness in the air and under foot, elected to take the field.
The opening mix of spin and pace started well, with Archie bowling their opener for 4, followed by a super Nikash spell (2-1-1-1) leading to a caught and bowled for the second wicket. A brief respite came for Lindow, then the runs dried up as 6 wickets fell for 28 runs.
Rory’s wonderfully safe hands in the field secured two wickets off the bowling of Charlie and Ollie (2-0-4-1), with Adi, Freddie and Yuvraj taking a wicket apiece, well supported by Zac’s cat-like prowess between silly point and point, saving countless singles. The crowd also marvelled at Nikash’s juggling skills at square leg, turning a difficult catch into a run out instead, a great effort.
It was left to Lindow’s 9 and 10 who battled and batted valiantly to take the score to 102/8 and make for an exciting chase.
As the clouds lifted, the first four wickets fell for 34 runs and a sense of deja vous permeated through the nervous home supporters. Freddie’s composed and controlled 21 ball 25 kickstarted the recovery, joined at the crease by Ted who treated the home crowd to a swashbuckling display of masterclass power hitting. He blasted his way to 25 off just 14 balls, including a monster third ball six over square leg and way beyond deep. It was left to Evan and Ollie, the latter punching three fours in a 12 ball 16, to take Didsbury over the line with more than 7 overs to spare.
It was great to see every single player contributing in some aspect; only six extras across 11 bowlers in 20 overs, some important contributions with the bat when the chips were down, and generally tight fielding with strong backing up so no overthrows.
A superb morning all round, played in the true spirit of the game, finishing early to enable supporters to enjoy a Fathers’ Day afternoon.
