DCC 117 for 7 (19.1 overs) GCC 116 for 4 (20.0 overs)

Mad dashes from schools, homes and offices ensured all the DCC boys arrived at Glodwick CC on time for Coach “tan lines” Laker’s warm up. A beautiful, yet sloping ground, this felt like a proper away match, the natural amphitheatre giving the DCC supporters a great view of the ground.
The home team won the toss and Didsbury took to the field with the usual level of enthusiasm and chat we have come to expect from our U13’s. GCC’s openers were strong and settled in very quickly and started to build runs, there was 50 on the board very quickly. Bowling from Rishi, Joe, Noah all failed to deliver the first wicket. Seb took the ball and unfortunately fell mid-action, this was to take him out of the game and to the hospital for X-Ray on a suspected fractured wrist. The team were going to have to dig deep to get through this a player down.
One of the best moments of the match (for the crowd’s amusement anyway!) was seeing Hana take the ball and with her first of the over, bowl the perfect line and length, flooring the batsman who was no doubt please he had remembered to wear his box!! Hana’s bowling continued perfectly, and she was unlucky not to take the first wicket.
The runs were ticking over, and 1 retirement down, when Rahul took the ball, and Adam was quick behind the stumps to take the first wicket – 65-1.
Raheem took the ball and soon took 2 wickets in succession, the first straight onto the stumps, the second an LBW there was no doubt about. 77-3 off 15 overs.
DCC then started to peg back the runs, with maiden overs from Rishi, Hana and Rahul. Zohaib was sharp in the field with a fantastic throw in to Adam to take the 4th Wicket… 94-4 with just 3 overs to go. GCC continued to add runs closing the innings on 116 -4.
Adam and Rishi opened the batting, knowing there was a job to do. However, Adam wasn’t long in the middle scooping the ball for an easy catch. DCC 7-1. Dan came in, and soon walked back, caught behind first ball. 7-2. This maybe wasn’t going to be straight forward. Rishi came in and the brothers looked like they could build a solid partnership, until Rahul was bowled for 12. DCC 30-3 off 5 overs.
Noah came in and he and Rishi were strong in the middle and finally the scoreboard began to look more promising. Retiring on 30, after hitting five 4’s and a splendid 6, Rishi gave way to Raheem. Noah and Raheem continued to build the runs, until Noah was bowled on 19 runs, we now needed 22 runs from 5 overs to win. (95-4) Doable.
Ben came in to partner Raheem, but his stint in the middle was short lived, caught for just 2, DCC 106-5 – just 11 runs required from 24 balls. Joe stepped up, was he to be the hero? Sadly no… caught behind on his second ball 109-6. Zohaib was in, and again soon out, bowled for 0. 110-7.
The tension in the crowd was palpable, we had lost 3 wickets for 15 runs, and now needed 7 to win from 12 balls, on paper not difficult BUT with Seb injured (and Rishi retired) we were down to our last bats woman, we could not afford to lose a wicket or it was all over. The pressure on Raheem and Hana was immense, but they dealt with it. They hit smart singles, didn’t try anything clever and Hana hit the first ball of the final over for a single and the DCC crowd cheered.
The team did not all play at their individual best, but as a team they were superb. They stayed calm, supported each other and deserved the hard-fought victory.
Special mention to Joe, stepping in, with just 5 minutes notice, to cover a very late drop-out.
