Sunday 30 May 2021 – Didsbury U11 Tigers beat Heaton Mersey U11 Academy by 5 Wickets

What a glorious Sunday morning, away at Heaton Mersey Sports Club. Wall to wall blue sky and with the sun beating down, Captain Adam won the toss and elected to field, Rab giving Tigers debuts to Harry Buck and Aaron Brody for this match.

Tight opening overs from Adam, Charlie, Harry, Calum, Aaron, Dylan and Kush saw Heaton Mersey reach 20/0 off 7 overs. James Coventry then came to the party with a 2 wicket maiden in the 8th over. Solomon followed with another maiden before Isaac took a wicket in the 10th (27/3). Charlie, Harry, Adam, Thomas and Solomon kept it tight to the end of the 15th (47/3). Thomas then took his first Tiger wicket in the 16th with Isaac, Calum, Dylan and James finishing off the overs, Heaton Mersey reaching 85/4. Thomas had done some excellent glove work before swapping to bowl with Kush taking over behind the stumps. Good work in the field kept the runs down however there were 3 dropped catches (albeit tough ones) which on another day may cost the Tigers.

With a relatively low total to reach Rab switched the batting order around, James and Aaron opening the batting. After his 2 wickets James batted with his usual intent, the second ball being struck for 6. Good running from him and Aaron saw a total of 20 put on the board part way through the 3rd over before James (15 off 14 1 6 1 4) was well bowled by Ellie Pagan (20/1). Continuing the batting changes Dylan was next in. Aaron struck a nice 6 in the 4th over but was caught out in the 5th finishing with 9 off 12 1 6 (32/2). Calum came in at 4 and soon saw Dylan (1 off 4) depart at the beginning of the 6th over bowled by Ellie Pagan (34/3). Solomon took over and he and Calum batted nicely though to the 11th over, Calum hitting 2 brutal 4s at the start of the 9th over. It was during the 11th over that Solomon (4 off 16) got bowled (59/4). His eyes lit up to a floating, slow delivery, trying to heave it out of the ground, missed it and was bowled. Charlie was in at 6 but saw his best mate Calum (18 off 23 3 4s) depart 5 balls later well caught at mid-off (63/5). Charlie (17 off 15 2 4s) was then joined by Isaac (6 off 15) and they both saw the game out during the 16th over. Sensible running between the wickets, rotating the strike from the pair and a couple of well timed 4’s from Charlie at the end saw us home.

In truth an easy win for the boys but there will be tougher challenges ahead. Man of the match for this (sun burnt) viewer was a tough one but with 2 wickets in an over and 15 off 14, including a big six over the bowlers head, I think James takes it.
