The first match for the U15 in the SMJCL saw DCC at home against Whalley Range at our second pitch at Wythenshawe CC.
With big boundaries and a slow outfield it was a low scoring thriller where no batters really looked settled and the ball was doing lots.
DCC won the toss and elected to bat first. Scoring was difficult and boundaries in short supply. Basil and Raheem top scored with the bat with 19 each (Raheem not out), beaten by extras of 24. Finn Lowe was out to a contender for catch of the season – a diving one handed catch low to the ground at mid-on – and some quick singles towards the end of the innings raised the total to 81/7, which was more than might have been hoped for most of the innings.
Whalley Range started their innings with intent but also found scoring difficult. Wickets fell regularly but after a good partnership mid innings they were on target for a tight victory. Whalley Range needed 7 to win of the last two overs but with accurate bowling, calm heads, 3 wickets and darkness falling DCC restricted them to 78/9 to win by 3 runs. Basil took 3 wickets, Raheem 2, Rishi 2, Noah 1 and a direct hit run out by Harry. Whalley Range top score with the bat was 24, beaten by extras of 27.
With both runs and wickets in the match Raheem was awarded DCC’s player of the day.
Last but not least, thank you to Wythenshawe CC for looking after us very well.
